Microsoft Agent Platform and Agent 365: Microsoft's move into corporate agents

While Google rebuilt the entire Vertex AI and AWS attacked the data layer, Microsoft chose a third path: use its already-installed productivity base - Microsoft 365, GitHub, Windows - as the distribution surface for agents. Two recent announcements show how this is being assembled in practice: the platform package presented at Build 2026 and the strategic argument behind it.

Foundry as the center, Agent 365 as governance

At Build 2026, Microsoft Foundry was reinforced as the central platform for building and running agents at scale, with two specific additions: Foundry IQ, offering "unified knowledge and serverless retrieval" with gains on agentic RAG benchmarks, and Work IQ, "production-ready intelligence for every agent," with its own APIs to integrate agents into existing workflows. The corresponding governance piece is the Agent Control Specification, which promises "portable runtime governance" - a control policy designed not to be locked to a single platform, signaling that Microsoft is thinking about agents that cross multiple environments, not just its own ecosystem.

Centralized governance and the agent lifecycle

The strategic argument behind these technical launches comes straight from Microsoft's own text: "AI alone won't change your business. The system running it will." The company structures this around three principles - an integrated system spanning multiple models (Azure, GitHub, Microsoft IQ, Fabric, Foundry, Windows), native governance via Entra, Purview, Defender, and Agent 365 itself, and continuous improvement under human supervision. The lifecycle Microsoft prescribes for any agent is explicit: "source, test, deploy, observe, and improve" - each stage mapping to a specific platform piece, not a separate manual process.

Redesigned infrastructure, not just software

One sign this bet is structural, not just marketing: the hardware infrastructure itself was redesigned. Azure Cobalt 200 VMs deliver a 50% performance gain, "fully optimized for modern agentic AI workloads." Microsoft also introduced Azure Container Apps Sandboxes for secure isolation of agentic workloads, and ASSERT, which converts specifications into evaluations - a direct bridge between spec-driven development and automated agent testing.

What this means for anyone already on Microsoft 365 and GitHub

The logic of Microsoft's bet is lower friction for anyone already living inside the ecosystem: identity via Entra, data via Fabric, code via GitHub, execution via Foundry - all already integrated, without requiring a new agent stack from scratch. The trade-off is the usual one for any vertically integrated platform: the Agent Control Specification's portable governance helps reduce lock-in, but the depth of integration between the pieces (Foundry IQ, Work IQ, Agent 365) is only fully realized inside Microsoft's own ecosystem.
