Agent platforms: the new competitive battleground for Microsoft, Google, and AWS

Until recently, picking an AI vendor was a decision about which model to buy. Today, with Microsoft, Google, and AWS announcing full agent platforms - not just model access - the decision reaching technical leadership's desk has changed category: it's no longer a "software license" budget line, it's an architectural bet that ties identity, data, tools, and governance to a specific vendor's choice.

What each one is actually selling

Microsoft consolidated Foundry, Foundry IQ, Work IQ, and Agent 365 around the Microsoft 365, GitHub, and Azure ecosystem - the lowest-friction bet for anyone already living in that world. Google reorganized the entire Vertex AI inside the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, with access to more than 200 models (including competitor Anthropic's) and its entire future roadmap flowing exclusively through this layer. AWS took the narrower path: Bedrock AgentCore specifically attacks the data and grounding problem, with Web Search and Managed Knowledge Base, charging by usage ($7 per 1,000 search queries), without trying to be the interface the end user sees.

Why this became a leadership decision, not just an engineering one

Each of these platforms embeds agent identity, an approved-tool registry, and governance policies - decisions that, once made, are expensive to reverse. Unlike switching model vendors (relatively simple, since the API interface looks similar across competitors), switching agent platforms after months of integration means redoing governance, permissions, and data connectors from scratch.

The right question isn't "which is best"

The three platforms respond well to different contexts: heavy dependence on Microsoft 365/GitHub favors Foundry; workload already concentrated in Vertex AI favors the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform; fragmented data architecture, unwilling to get locked into a specific user experience, finds a more neutral partner in AWS. The question technical leadership should be asking isn't which vendor has "the best agent" - it's which of these three architectural bases already underpins most of the operation today, because that's where migration will cost the least.
